I Married Sherlock Holmes!

I'm not kidding. I married the greatest detective of our time. The man astounds me.

Yesterday, I found a curious puddle of liquid at the front corner of our stacked washer and dryer. So I had Justin come take a look. "It looks like water but it's got something gritty in it, like salt or sugar or something." So Justin puts his hand in it, rubs his fingers together and then proceeds to taste it. "Hmmm," he says, "It tastes like salt. Not sure what that could be." He takes a closer look and notices that the crystals aren't square, but are flat and concludes that it isn't table salt at any rate.

So I clean up the mess as best as I can which is coming from under the washer and forget about it, until later in the day when the same puddle appears again. I put my hand in it and notice that it's got the grit in it again but that it's "clean" smelling. So I throw a rag on it to mop it up again. I immediately realize that it's bleach as the mustard rag turns to fluorescent orange. (If you know anything about me, you know that I am not allowed to handle, buy or otherwise use bleach in our house because it's very dramatic every time that I do.) So one ruined towel later, Justin walks in the door.

I tell him that the puddle is back and he says, "I know what it is. It's bleach."

"Well how did you figure that one out?" I say.

So he whips out his college chemistry on me and says, "Because I know that table salt is NaCl but that since the crystals weren't in the cubes like table salt, it had to come from something that had Sodium Chloride in it and bleach is the Chloride part of that." Seriously?!?

I had taken everything off of the top of the dryer. There were two jugs that had a bleach type substance. So Sherlock says, "Let's find out where it's coming from. Where were the jugs?" One was sitting on top, the other was leaning up against the back wall a little sideways but not enough for it to be coming out of the lid. He pours a cup of water on the top of the dryer to see where it would drain if something were to spill. It drains to the front so we think it's either draining into the dryer itself or it's not coming from the top. It's obviously coming from the floor in the back.

Meanwhile he puts both of the jugs on dry paper towels in the two sink sides. We go take a look and bingo! The jug that was tipped against the back has a wet spot right next to a pin hole in the side so small that you cannot even see it with the naked eye. A hole that was so small and had been dripping at a rate of a couple drops her hour for the past 2 months. I mean, who thinks to do this sort of thing? So yes, it's left some holes in the linoleum too!

I said, "Well, how should we clean it up since we can't exactly move the stacked appliances without totally emptying and dismantling the pantry?"

He says, "I don't do clean up, only diagnostic. You'll have to hire someone else for that, ma'am."

So as I get on top of the dryer, in the 2 foot space between it and the ceiling and shine a light down behind to assess the cleanup, I am reminded by the webbing of duct tape holding the dryer vent hose to the back of the unit in place of the broken attachment part the moron that installed it had broken the very first day, that it wasn't that long ago that I had a visit from Sherlock Holmes.

PS: I think he gets it honestly. It definitely runs in the family. Can anyone say Oafy Mike?

Somewhere between best friends and siblings...

...you find cousins.

When you are a kid, there's something about cousins that's different than any of the other people that you spend time with. They are some of the best friends you will ever have growing up. They are as close to you as a brother or a sister but as kindred as the best of buddies. There's just something special about cousins and I'm so glad our kids got to experience that this summer.

Stroller shopping?

I know that this seems a little late for me to be talking about strollers considering our boys are almost completely finished with them. However, had I only known, 7 years ago how serious it is to choose the right stroller, I would have taken more time to figure out which one was best.

I bought the Maclaren Volo last week at a resale shop for our upcoming San Diego trip and it was a lifesaver. Yes we already had a cheapy umbrella stroller from WalMart that we dropped only $15 on, but with that being said, it was rickety, too short to comfortably push, sun shade was useless, no storage and you had to bend over and use two hands to fold it up. I pushed our "new" stroller all over the San Diego Zoo and Sea World with one or both the boys in it and couldn't help thinking "Oh, if I had only known." Disney, here we come!

Here are my top reasons I love this stroller:
  • Mesh, think garden hose for cleaning
  • Light, think connecting in an airport from valet check to the end of the jetway before the mad dash to the next flight
  • Sturdy, Patrick is only 40lbs and it goes up to 50!
  • Really small folded, fits sideways in the truck of our Jetta
  • Storage basket
  • Large, useful sunshade
  • You can fold and unfold it with one hand and your foot

So for those of you looking for your first or a new lightweight, umbrella, it would be worth your while looking into these little buggers. It may save you a whole lot of hassle in the long run.

Go here for an extensive review so you know the pros and cons to see if it's a good fit for what you need. Momokd.com has some other good product reviews as well so check her out while you are there.

Why I live in Durango

Durango is so far from family, the nearest interstate is over 150 miles away, the shopping is abysmal, and the median house price is close to $400K! We sacrifice a whole lot to live here and people ask "WHY?!?!"

Getting ready for the ride

Here's the answer. On a given Friday afternoon, we go to play in someone's backyard after school and it looks something like this: Bike racks on mini vans, miniature mountain bikes, rainbow colored helmets, dusty, rocky trails through the sage brush, cactus and pinion pines, skinned knees, kids covered in dirt, and afterward, huge slices of watermelon and mixed drinks for the moms on the front porch all to the backdrop of the LaPlata 12K.

Patrick, Aeneas, Ava and Alaysia

Aeneas and Lauren taking a scenic break.

Aeneas making tracks.

Alaysia, Ava, Patrick and Aeneas having some refreshment.

A group of very different people all striving to give their kids a gift. The gift of the wilderness and open spaces. And there is no price to put on that. That's why.

My bladder is a trampoline!

Seems like the baby has figured out lately hat he has some more room to stretch and he can reach his little frog legs all the way down to my bladder! It's the strangest feeling, but it's very distinct each time he thumps my bladder. I'm glad to know he's growing, moving around, and active. I just can't wait to meet him and see his little face for the first time!
Here are some belly shots for those who have requested... I've been taking pictures every time we have an appointment with the midwife, which works out to every four weeks. It's a good reminder for us to take a picture and we always have appointments in the mornings, so we're home together getting ready, which means I have a photographer. Can you tell that my belly isn't the ONLY thing growing?!
16 weeks.... 20 weeks.... 24 weeks....
It seems like we are in crunch mode to get things ready. We have picked out our bedding (below) after much discussion and debate. It was tough! And we have picked a crib (also below), but our crib will be white. We're going to paint the room an apple green and put in wainscoting - similar look to the walls in the last picture. And, if you ask Joel, I'm doing an awful lot of "nesting" these days. Organizing closets, cleaning out drawers, donating lots of stuff, getting projects done that've been on a long-running to-do list... all along with trying to get the nursery looking just right. He's been a great sport though and allows me my time and space to nest away.

Bedding! Crib Room color

To steal Hannah's idea again, I'll list some of the "things I'm loving lately... pregnant edition."
My snoogle pillow
This pillow has revolutionized not only my nights of sleep, but Joel's as well. I'd been keeping him up with my tossing and turning. So it was an anniversary gift from Joel and, from the first night, we both noticed a difference in how well we slept and it's been heavenly ever since.
Edy's Drumstick ice cream

Ice cream filled with waffle cone pieces and chocolate covered peanuts... need I say more?

Old Navy Maternity Clothes

While I haven't actually purchased any maternity clothes from Old Navy of my own, I have worn many of Crystal's (thanks Titol!) and recently placed an order. I cannot wait for some new clothes to come in. I'm really pushing it still trying to wear my regular clothes and am in need of some items to get me through the next 3 months. The dress above is one of the things I ordered that I'm most excited about! Dresses and skirts while pregnant are so comfy!
